Another silly project by Radio TV Solutions, who are best known for their previous Half-Life related series, Half-Life VR But the AI is Self-Aware. The Gnome series is divided into several acts of 2-3 episodes each. Sadly, every video after and including ACT 2: PART 1 does not have subtitles (specifically Wayne's speaking), so I'd like to write them up myself. |

i made my first escapade into writing subtitles 3 years or so ago, making them for a joana ceddia video. it was this one specifically. because her official is down though and there's only reuploads, my subtitles don't exist there anymore. SAD! i don't remember the UI youtube had for editing them, but it can't have been too bad. i probably spent 2 or 3 hours of it, using the auto-generated subtitles as a reference.
i recently (march 2024) watched the 1977 raggedy ann and andy movie with a friend (:3) and was appalled (but not surprised) to find that there aren't any subtitles available in youtube uploads or on websites who supply them. it's a fairly niche, not to mention old movie after all. so i've set out to writing them myself.
while i could technically translate from german to english as well, i think that would be way too much fucking work for me. despite being perfectly fluent in both languages, i find it very hard to translate on the spot. i would have endless trouble trying to retain all the nuances. not doing that.
however, as someone who enjoys typing, this is very fun work. very time-consuming, but fun. i hope i get to do this for more pieces of media!
i'm using a program called subtitle edit to write my subs.
ignore the red lines and the weird hashtags.
on the top left you get a nice overview of the current lines, below a textbox for editing the current line. while you can use links, e.g. youtube, to link to and load videos, i recommend loading proper video files into it from your computer. using links i couldn't get the waveform editor to work, which is the bar you see at the bottom. very neat tool, showing you the way the audio at any given moment "looks" like, and it lets you put subtitles into place at very precise positions.
oh yeah. i've looked at plenty of sources to see if there were actual standards in place for writing subtitles, and while it does seem like there are some rules people generally follow... it seems like more detailed standards are defined by whatever company you're making them for? i don't fucking know. i've opted to instead to look at movies and shows in my... "library"... and see how they do it.
